For the fifth consecutive year, SCA has been recognized as one of the world’s 100 most sustainable companies by Canadian Corporate Knights. The Corporate Knight’s list, “The Global 100 Most Sustainable Corporations in the World,” was presented this week at the World Economic Forum in Davos. The list comprises companies from a total of 15 countries that were evaluated based on how effectively the companies deal with various environmental and social aspects. The 100 companies that qualify for the global sustainability list must have an exceptional ability to address their sector-specific environmental and social risks and opportunities. “Naturally, it is a great honor that SCA for the fifth consecutive year qualifies as one of the world’s 100 most sustainable companies,” said Patrik Isaksson, vice president environmental affairs at SCA. “It is also an acknowledgement of the comprehensive and long-term work we put into environmental and sustainability issues, an effort than continues undiminished.” In the global sustainability list for 2009, SCA is one of five Swedish companies among the 100 companies that qualified. Corporate Knights publishes the world’s most circulated magazine focusing on corporate sustainability issues. Brief facts regarding SCA and the environment: SCA recently decided on a new environmental goal whereby the company will reduce its carbon-dioxide emissions from fossil fuels and from the purchase of electricity and heating by 20% in relation to the production level by the year 2020 with 2005 as reference year—SCA’s forests have an annual growth that exceeds felling and leads to a net absorption of carbon-dioxide, corresponding to 2.6 million tons. SCA is a large consumer and producer of bio-fuels with only 1% of its fuel balance consisting of coal and 5% of oil.
